Willie Geist is celebrating a milestone every parent both looks forward to — and quietly dreads. The longtime Sunday TODAY host and MSNBC anchor recently watched his daughter, Lucie, 17, graduate from high school, and the moment hit him far harder than he expected.
Geist appeared on TODAY with Jenna & Friends on June 10 to share the joy and emotions that came with the big day. Speaking to friend and host Jenna Bush Hager, he admitted that although he knew this moment was coming, it still arrived like a surprise.
“I probably was feeling that way a little bit back then, but also I thought, ‘That’s a way off. I don’t really have to worry about it,’” Geist said, reflecting on earlier conversations about his daughter growing up. “And then all of a sudden, it’s on you.”
He described the whirlwind surrounding graduation week — the gatherings, school traditions, and distractions that keep everyone busy — until the reality hits with full force.
“All of a sudden, you’re sitting there and you’re looking up at that stage and you go, ‘Oh. That’s her! That’s Lucie, that’s my daughter walking across, shaking the hand of the principal and getting the diploma.’”
That was the moment, Geist said, when time suddenly felt much shorter — and much more precious.
Watching Lucie accept her diploma placed a lifetime of fatherhood into perspective. As Geist explained it, parents spend nearly two decades waking up every day thinking first and foremost of their children — their needs, their safety, their happiness.
“It occupies everything about your life,” he said. “And then all of a sudden, she’s ready to go.”

That transition brings excitement for who she will become… and also flashes of parental panic.
“You hope you instilled in her all the values and the habits and the things she’ll need to go out in the world,” Geist continued. “It’s a beautiful moment, it’s exciting but also — as any parent who has been through this knows — the excitement at times becomes terror.”
He laughed softly as he admitted those intrusive parenting thoughts never really go away.
“I’ll be driving the car and my stomach will drop and I’ll go, ‘Oh my gosh!’”
Still, the joy in his voice was unmistakable. Lucie’s future is bright — and her dad couldn’t be prouder.
Geist and his wife, author and entrepreneur Christina Geist, also share a son, George, 15, who isn’t far behind his sister on the path to independence.
Graduation followed another emotional milestone for the family: Lucie earning her driver’s license.
Back in February 2024, Geist spoke about the moment he first watched her drive away alone — nothing dramatic, just a teenager pulling away from the curb… yet everything changed.
“She pulled away. She’s driving in front of me and Christina and it was a little emo,” he admitted. “The first thought I had was, I taught her how to ride a bike in Riverside Park in New York.”

He vividly remembered holding the back of her bike seat, running alongside her, and then letting go.
“She turns back and goes, ‘Oh, Dad’s not holding the seat anymore. I did it.’ And I had the same feeling.”
It’s a universal parenting metaphor — the bittersweet pride that comes when kids discover their independence and begin moving, quite literally, out of reach.
For Geist, Lucie’s graduation symbolizes the culmination of years of love, lessons, and long days that felt routine but ultimately shaped who she is. And while it brings some sadness, he said it also brings tremendous gratitude — and awe.
As a journalist and morning television personality, Geist is used to breaking news and fast-moving stories. But in this chapter, he’s learning to pause, absorb, and appreciate the milestone in front of him.
“What occupies your life in the best way suddenly shifts,” he said. “She’s ready to take her first steps into the world on her own — and that’s what we’ve been preparing her for.”
Parents everywhere felt that line in their hearts.
Like millions of parents watching their children graduate this year, the Geists are navigating pride and nostalgia hand-in-hand. While Lucie begins her next adventure, her family is adjusting to a home — and routine — that will feel different without her.

But Geist knows she’ll thrive — because she has already shown responsibility, confidence, and care in every stage leading here.
“She’s a good, responsible kid,” he said proudly.
No matter where Lucie goes next, her dad will be cheering her on — sometimes quietly from the sidelines, sometimes fighting back tears in the stands, always rooting for the young woman whose childhood just reached a beautiful end.
The next chapter is waiting to be written — and judging by the joy and pride on her father’s face, it’s going to be something extraordinary.
