When the news broke that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was being pulled from the air indefinitely by ABC stations around the country for comments Kimmel made about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, many celebrities wasted no time sharing their thoughts. Former President Barack Obama, comedian Wanda Sykes and journalist Don Lemon were just a few who immediately made public statements about the move and the greater threat to our Constitutional right to free speech in America.

While the news dominated the headlines, some wondered how it would be covered on “The View,” especially since the show, which has never been shy about criticizing President Donald Trump, is one he’s long mused about taking off the air for good. The ladies were noticeably silent on the topic for the first couple of days. But if you thought threats of cancellation would keep the hosts from speaking their minds, think again.
The panel wasted no time getting into the topic at the top of their September 22 show, which opened with co-host Whoopi Goldberg reminding the audience that “The View” has been known for nearly 30 seasons as a platform for hosts to share their opinions on the news of the day.
“Did y’all really think we weren’t going to talk about Jimmy Kimmel? I mean, have you watched the show over the last 29 seasons? So you know, no one silences us,” Goldberg said.
She went on to explain that when the news broke about Kimmel’s suspension on Wednesday, September 17, the hosts waited to see if the late night host would respond before discussing it at the hot topics table the following day. It did not come up on the Friday, September 19 show, because it was taped in advance, Goldberg clarified.
The host went on to remind viewers that the Constitution protects citizens from being silenced by the government, and ended with a message for President Donald Trump.
“I don’t understand how you are the man in charge of the nation and you still don’t understand how the First Amendment works,” Goldberg said.
