The Houston Astros are determined to leave the 2025 season in the past.
After missing the playoffs during the final weekend of last year and battling injuries throughout the season, the organization entered 2026 focused on turning the page. Spring training has become an important opportunity not only to prepare for Opening Day but also to evaluate young talent within the system.
And one rising prospect has already begun attracting attention.
Walker Janek making strong early impression

Catcher Walker Janek, one of the Astros’ top prospects, delivered one of the most exciting performances of Houston’s spring so far.
In a recent exhibition game against the Miami Marlins, the 23-year-old blasted a two-run home run, providing a key moment in the Astros’ victory. The swing highlighted both his power and the potential that has scouts and fans increasingly excited about his future.
But the home run wasn’t the only reason Janek has become a spring storyline.
Across his first few games of the exhibition schedule, Janek has been extremely productive at the plate. In limited opportunities, he has posted a .429 batting average with a .600 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging percentage, making the most of every chance he gets.
Though he has only logged a handful of at-bats, his performance has sparked conversation about how quickly he could rise through Houston’s system.
A fast-rising catching prospect
Janek’s journey to professional baseball began just down the road from Houston.
He played college baseball at Sam Houston State University, located in Huntsville, Texas. After three strong collegiate seasons, he entered the 2024 MLB Draft, where the Astros selected him in the first round.
Following the draft, Janek quickly began his professional career in the minor leagues and spent time at the High-A level. His early development has already positioned him among the organization’s most promising young players.
Currently ranked as the No. 5 prospect in Houston’s farm system, Janek appears poised to continue climbing the ladder.
A potential fast track through the system
Despite his impressive spring showing, it remains unlikely that Janek will immediately jump to Triple-A when the regular season begins.
Still, his early results suggest he may not remain in High-A for long.
If he continues producing at the plate while developing defensively behind the plate, the Astros could accelerate his path through the minor leagues. That could potentially put him in position for a late-season call-up in 2026.
For now, Houston is simply watching his development closely.
But with each swing during spring training, Walker Janek is giving the Astros — and the rest of baseball — more reasons to believe he could become an important part of their future.
