As footage and images of the stunning, vibrant scenes appeared on screen, David continued, “Overnight in Sandown, New Hampshire, east of Manchester. This time-lapse video shows the green lighting up the sky later, the orange and red hues too, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, outside Minneapolis, Alex Falconer, capturing the red and green shimmering above his backyard.”

David added, “The lights reaching as far south as North Carolina and Texas in Fort Worth, the northern lights above this neighborhood tonight.”
“NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, is saying the incredible phenomenon is happening due to a solar storm so strong it’s impacting GPS communications and some power grids.”
The ABC News anchor then showcased several videos submitted by viewers, capturing their perspectives of the Northern Lights. One clip featured a resident filming the stunning display from his front yard, while another captured the phenomenon from an aircraft window.
The heartwarming segment was posted to ABC World News Tonight’s Instagram page with the caption, “Dazzling waves of color are lighting up the skies coast to coast for the second night in a row in the U.S. Americans from Colorado to Texas are sharing their images of the northern lights display. @DavidMuirABC reports.

“Wow, the guy in the airplane is so lucky to see miles of northern lights,” one user commented under the post, referring to one of the fan videos that had been sent in to David, as another fan simply penned, “Breathtaking.”
A third person wrote, “Absolutely stunning!” as a fourth gushed, “Oh wow, Beautiful David, thank you for sharing.”
However, several viewers were quick to spot a mistake in David’s coverage. “‘Forth Worth’ lol someone was asleep on the job,” one sharp-eyed viewer criticized, noting that when the ABC presenter displayed the Northern Lights in Fort Worth, the text overlay incorrectly spelled it as “Forth Worth.”
The error was also caught by another viewer who remarked, “*Fort Worth, TX Come on ABC!” The segment was uploaded to ABC’s YouTube channel, where the correct spelling of Fort Worth was used. The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, occur when a geomagnetic storm from the sun enters Earth’s atmosphere near the poles, energizing gas molecules in the atmosphere.
When these gases are energized, they illuminate in a stunning array of colors. The intensity of the color and how far south the aurora can be seen is determined by the strength of the geomagnetic activity.
