David Muir was back hosting ABC’s World News Tonight as he shared an update on a spate of robberies on Long Island after thieves approached a delivery man in broad daylight
ABC viewers were shocked as David Muir shared a breaking news update about a group of thieves targeting FedEx packages on Long Island.
The 52-year-old journalist was back hosting World News Tonight on Monday, November 24, after taking a break from the show over the weekend. Muir, who has a surprising net worth and staggering salary, interrupted the program to announce officials have captured a “sophisticated network” of thieves who allegedly stole FedEx packages containing electronic devices.

Prosecutors in New York have indicted 14 people for enterprise corruption and other charges in connection with the alleged theft ring, the Suffolk County Prosecutor’s Office announced. Reporting from the ABC desk, Muir said, “Tonight on Long Island, the thieves caught stealing deliveries, approaching a FedEx delivery man in broad daylight, ripping a package from his hands.” It comes after David issued a bombshell 4-word message as he stepped away from the ABC desk live on air.

The ABC host continued, “Officials say at least 14 people were part of a sophisticated network of thefts on Long Island. The group has been stealing electronics. They say some of those electronics sent to these homes by the thieves who then intercepted the packages.”
A clip of the broadcast was shared on Instagram along with the caption, “At least 14 people have been charged after authorities broke up an alleged ring of porch pirates outside New York City. The thieves allegedly had inside information and knew when FedEx would drop off packages. @davidmuirabc reports.”
Viewers flocked to the comments to share their shock at the thefts. “It’s totally outraged by the victims…. They should be caught and jailed…. It’s unsettling….” one person posted.
Mocking the crimes, another added, “Very sophisticated,” with a crying laughing emoji. A relieved viewer shared, “Thank God they are stopped.”
A fourth person said, “Too bad they canât be made examples on the spot⊠would nip it pretty fast,” while another questioned, “What the f–k is going on in this country?”
“These thieves are getting bolder by the day before you know it,” a sixth ABC fan warned. “They’ll just start inviting themselves into your home.”
The thieves were caught following a two-year investigation which uncovered 48 alleged pattern acts of theft targeting FedEx packages. The targeted packages contained electronics and cellphones, according to the Suffolk County Prosecutor’s Office.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said the theft ring allegedly “hacked” into the delivery system to set up cellphone deliveries under fake names, using random addresses as “convenient drop-off points” without the people who live there knowing.
The group included “runners” who would retrieve the packages. Other defendants were allegedly involved in the wholesale redistribution of the stolen devices, prosecutors said.
A total of 50 felony charges have been filed in connection with the case, including enterprise corruption, grand larceny, identity theft, robbery and conspiracy, according to the Suffolk County Prosecutor’s Office.
Tierney issued a statement saying, “For two years, this alleged porch pirate ring plagued our community and built a criminal enterprise on the backs of Suffolk families and businesses. These indictments demonstrate that we will track down and hold accountable those who commit crimes against Suffolk County residents, regardless of how extensive their operation.”
It comes after Muir fans fumed ‘this is messed up’ as the ABC host returned with a shocking update.
