ABC World News Tonight was halted for some heartbreaking news, and host David Muir delivered the latest on a road rage shooting in Las Vegas that left an 11-year-old boy dead
It was an emotional watch for ABC World News Tonight viewers as host David Muir updated the nation on a heart-wrenching story involving an innocent 11-year-old boy.
The 52-year-old journalistĀ halted the show for some breaking news, telling viewers, “The deadly road rage shooting in Las Vegas, an 11-year-old son on his way to schoolĀ was shot and killedĀ while riding in the backseat of his stepfather’s car.

“Tonight, here is the video of the other driver, who authorities say pulled out the gun. Here’s Matt Gutman,” David added as he handed over his fellow ABC News colleague. A video then played of the horrific moment showing the step-father of the child screaming at cops as they tried to gauge what had just occurred.

Matt then gave some further context to the clip, saying, “Tonight, police in Las Vegas releasing body camera video showing the frantic and gut-wrenching moments after a child was killed in horrific road rage attack. The boy’s stepfather in agony, screaming, inconsolable, [alleged] shooter Tyler Johns appeared stunned.”
The reporter then continued, “The boy mortally wounded in the back of the car. 11-year-old Brandon Dominguez Chavarria was riding in the back seat last Friday when police say his stepfather had a heated exchange with Johns as they merged onto this Nevada freeway.”
A picture of little Brandon then flashed up on screen as Matt said, “The Family Sharing this photo of Brandon on GoFundMe. The shooter, 22, was cuffed and put in the back of a patrol car.
“Tyler Johns has been charged with murder in the courtroom this week, Brandon’s mother confronting him, ‘He wanted to take somebody’s life away. He took my son away. He was just trying to make it to school,'” Matt went on as footage from the courtroom played.

Matt concluded his report by talking to David back in the studio, “And David, that suspect, Tyler Johns, faces the single broad charge of open murder. He’s currently being held without bail. As for that anguished stepfather, it’s unknown if he faces any charges at this point.”
A clip of the segment was shared to ABC World News Tonight’s Instagram account with the caption, “Newly released body camera video shows the moments after a deadly shooting in Nevada that killed an 11-year-old boy in the back of a car during an alleged road rage incident. @MattGutmanABC has details.”
Viewers were quick to share their upset over the story, with one user commenting, “Omg what! My heart! Omg! Heās pleading for them to come to the car,” as a second echoed,” I agree with the mother he just wanted to un-alive somebody point blank period..him saying I didnāt know there was a kid in the car and whether or not there was a kid in the car you shot into a known occupied vehicle, reckless.”
A third person pointed out, “This is heartbreaking. Thatās why as hard as it may be we need to learn to walk away and avoid confrontation. We just never know whoās the next lunatic carrying a weapon.”
“Why are you shooting at someone because they pissed you off. If you didnāt have a gun this wouldnāt have happened. That poor family just lost their precious child over your anger,” someone else fumed.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Friday (November 21), when two vehicles in traffic began “jockeying for positions trying to pass each other on the congested freeway,” police said during a press conference on the same day.

Tyler Matthew Johns, 22, was arrested and booked for open murder, which is defined as first-degree murder and other included offenses — and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, according to the Henderson Police Department.
