On his very first day as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, Klint Kubiak didnāt start with draft boards.
He started with Maxx Crosby.

Before the press conference. Before the cameras. Before the speeches about culture and vision. Crosby was already in the building, working out. Kubiak grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down with the franchiseās most recognizable defender.
Symbolic?
Maybe.
Necessary?
Absolutely.

Because while the Raiders hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and more than $90 million in projected cap space, the biggest question hanging over the franchise may not be who they draft.
Itās whether Maxx Crosby stays.
Trade rumors have simmered for months. Fox Sportsā Jay Glazer recently suggested Crosbyās time in Las Vegas could be over. NFL Media, however, reported that Crosby has not requested a trade and remains in a āgreat placeā with the organization.
Two narratives. One reality still unclear.
The tension traces back to December, when the Raiders shut Crosby down for the season due to a knee injury. Glazer reported that the decision left the five-time Pro Bowler unhappy enough to reevaluate his future with the team.

For a player whose identity is built on relentless effort, being sidelined can feel like something deeper than medical precaution.
So when Kubiak addressed Crosby during his introductory press conference, his tone was deliberate.
āWe want him to be a part of our success going forward,ā Kubiak said. āHeās one of the best players in the NFL. Thatās a no-brainer.ā
Strong words. But not a contract extension. Not a guarantee.
Just intent.
The Raiders are entering a critical offseason. A new head coach. A top draft pick. Massive financial flexibility. A roster that finished near the bottom of the league.
In rebuild mode, everything is negotiable.
Crosby, however, represents more than production. He represents credibility. Effort. Edge. Heās the kind of defender offenses game-plan around and teammates rally behind.
Trading him would signal a deeper reset. Keeping him would signal competitive ambition.
The difference matters.
For Crosby, the equation may be simpler: stability and vision.

Does he believe in the direction Kubiak is setting? Does he trust the front office to build around him? Does the organization view him as foundational ā or transactional?
Kubiakās early outreach suggests awareness. You donāt meet with a player like Crosby on Day One unless you understand the stakes.
But understanding doesnāt equal resolution.
The Raiders must balance long-term planning with immediate identity. A franchise canāt rebuild culture while dismantling its most recognizable pillar without consequence.
And yet, draft capital from a blockbuster trade could accelerate other areas of need ā quarterback, offensive line, depth.
This is where strategy collides with symbolism.
Crosby hasnāt publicly demanded out. Reports conflict. The coffee meeting happened.
But in the NFL, silence doesnāt eliminate uncertainty.
It amplifies it.
If Crosby stays, he becomes the defensive anchor of a new era. If he leaves, it marks the clearest sign yet that Las Vegas is starting over more drastically than advertised.
For now, the image is simple:

A new head coach. A star pass rusher. A quiet conversation before the headlines began.
The Raiders say they want Crosby.
The question is whether wanting ā and winning ā align.
Because in Vegas, nothing stays unresolved for long.

And this offseason might define not just Maxx Crosbyās future ā but the Raidersā identity moving forward.
