One worker has died and two others were left injured in a trench collapse in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, with David Muir sharing the news on ABC’s World News Tonight
ABC viewers are sending prayers after David Muir shared an update about a deadly trench collapse in Massachusetts.
One worker died and two others were injured on Tuesday after the horror incident, which happened during ongoing sewer construction in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. One of the workers was trapped for five hours before he was rescued.
Muir spoke about the trench collapse as he hosted Tuesday’s episode of ABC’s World News Tonight “Back here in the U.S. tonight and near Boston, a massive rescue effort in Yarmouth on Cape Cod. One worker was killed, two others rescued in a trench collapse,” the 52-year-old told viewers.

A video of the rescue effort played, showing a man being pushed along on a stretcher. Muir continued, “One of the rescued men reaching out, shaking hands with a rescuer as he was carried away right there, that trench part of a sewer construction project on the Cape.”
A clip of the report was shared on Instagram with the caption, “Outside of Boston, rescue efforts are underway after a trench collapsed as part of a sewer construction project. At least one worker was killed and two have been rescued. David Muir reports.”
Viewers rushed to the comments to offer their condolences. “May the LORD have the deceased in his heavenly Glory and quick recovery for the other gentlemen,” one person wrote.

A second viewer shared, “Condolences and deepest sympathy to the deceased victim’s family, and wishing the wounded to have a speedy full recovery….” as someone else added, “Many thanks for these incredible rescuers. Many prayers that the workers are all found.” Other people shared rows of prayer hand emojis.
The trench collapse happened at about 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Rescue crews were able to get the man who died out of the trench at around 2.45 p.m.
The fire department had initially responded after receiving a call about two people who were trapped in the trench. A third worker then jumped in to try and help.

Rescue workers encountered complications when trying to free the workers, with the trench continuing to collapse as they tried to remove a worker who was buried up to his waist. He was eventually freed at around 1.20 p.m. and flown to a trauma center in Rhode Island. The man who had jumped into the trench was able to free himself and was later taken to hospital by ambulance.
A woman who witnessed the incident said she heard someone shouting for help on Tuesday morning. “I noticed that some of the construction crew working on the other side of the street had ran over to the other hole that they were digging,” she told WBZ-TV.
The witness, who asked not to be named, added, “Additional crews, additional towns started to show up. Search and rescue started to show up. We saw them pull one worker out, who was conscious at the time.”
