President Trump on Monday offered his condolences to the family of murdered Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, and vowed to “confront” the “evil people” in society — after he was shown the shocking video of her being hacked to death on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“There are evil people, and we have to confront that. I just give my love and hope to the family of the young woman who was stabbed this morning or last night in Charlotte by a madman,” Trump told reporters.
“A lunatic just got up and started — it’s right on the tape, not really watchable, because it’s so horrible, — but just viciously stabbed. She’s just sitting there. So they’re evil people. We have to be able to handle that. If we don’t handle that, we don’t have a country,” Trump said, following Friday’s release of security footage showing the sickening killing, allegedly carried out by career criminal Decarlos Brown, 34.

The president also referenced the recent mass shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, which left two children dead and over a dozen wounded, and pledged to end senseless violence.
“We’re going to get to the end of it. And you know, when you have horrible killings, you have to take horrible actions,” Trump said, before blaming cashless bail for violent criminals reoffending.
“And the actions that we take are nothing — this cashless bail started a wave in our country where a killer kills somebody and is out on the street by the afternoon, in many cases, going out and going against cashless bail,” he said.
Zarutska had moved to the US to live with an aunt in Charlotte in 2022 after Russia invaded her country, and was returning from her job at a local pizzeria, Zapeddies, when she was killed.
A top advisor for Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Ukrainian government supports President Trump’s crackdown on crime, adding that the new incoming ambassador to the US would be involved with the investigation into Iryna’s murder.

“This is one more demonstration of the many things said by President Trump that he’s fighting against criminals. It’s important,” said Andriy Yermak.
“We’re looking very attentively and seriously for the investigation. We believe that it will be proper, it will be quick, and of course, any involving any support from Ukrainian side.
“I know that during the next days, the new ambassador of Ukraine will be already in DC, and she will be personally participating. And this is why President Trump, so many times has made so many efforts and talked about how it’s necessary to fight the criminals,” he added.
The mainstream media and leading Democrats were accused on Sunday of downplaying or ignoring the crime, and other similar acts of violence in America’s major cities and on public transport.
One of Trump’s advisors said that Iryna’s murder highlighted a major issue that his administration would make the focus of its campaign to paint the Democrats as soft on crime.

“This is exactly what he’s talking about, and it’s going to be an issue he’s going to highlight,” an unidentified Trump advisor told Axios. “This is not just about North Carolina. Other campaigns will deal with this.”
Charlotte’s Democratic Mayor Vi Lyles came under attack from Republicans after she praised media outlets for refusing to share video of the fatal attack on Iryna.
The accused killer, Brown, who faces charges of first-degree murder, is currently undergoing a competency evaluation. His family said he was previously diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Among the convictions on his lengthy rap sheet are armed robbery, felony larceny, breaking and entering, and shoplifting, court records seen by The Post show.
