It was supposed to be a triumphant global moment for Donald Trumpāa showcase of āhistoric peace,ā international leadership, and his self-declared mastery of world diplomacy.
Instead, the world watched a slow-motion train wreck.

On live television, with the leaders of Congo and Rwanda sitting stiffly beside him, Trump announced what he called a āhistoric peace deal.ā But there was one massive problem:
The central group responsible for the violenceāM23āwasnāt included. Wasnāt present. Wasnāt mentioned.
In other words, the deal wasnāt a deal.
It was a prop.
And Trump couldnāt even stay awake for it.
A Fake Agreement for a Real War
As Trump droned through his remarksāmispronouncing names, contradicting himself, and drifting off mid-sentenceājournalists in the room exchanged looks. Everyone knew the truth:
People were dying in Congo the very same day Trump was declaring āpeace.ā

One African reporter, brave enough to cut through the pageantry, asked the blunt question:
āIf this is a peace deal, why are people still being killed in Congo today?ā
Trump blinked, turned toward the presidents beside him, and waved his hand as if shooing away reality.
āLook at them! Theyāre happy. They get along!ā
They do not get along. And everyone in the room knew itāexcept, apparently, Donald Trump.
Even worse, Trump claimed the peace would materialize āin a few months⦠in a few years,ā contradicting the āimmediate breakthroughā he had bragged about seconds earlier.
The ādealā was little more than a photo opāone that the actual leaders involved barely tolerated.
Trumpās Confusion Hits New Levels
Trumpās rambling only escalated from there.
He claimed he had been in Saudi Arabia ātwo months agoā meeting the future king.
Fact check: He hadnāt been there in months.
He struggled to pronounce basic African namesāso much so that after botching āPresident Kagame,ā he gave up entirely and referred to him simply as āthe president of DRC,ā pointing at the wrong man.
Then came the moment that had viewers recoiling:
Trump repeatedly stared at his own hand.
Camera angles later showed a bandage covering what looked like a swollen, injured hand. Trump kept glancing at it throughout the presser, visibly distracted, as if he himself didnāt know what was wrong.
It was bizarre.
It was unsettling.
It was the President of the United States.
The Donald J. Trump āInstitute of Peaceā ā While Wars Rage Everywhere
In the middle of announcing a fake peace framework, Trump abruptly thanked Marco Rubio for renaming the U.S. Institute of Peace after himāthe Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.

This happened while:
- war continues in Ukraine
- U.S. naval strikes killed dozens off Venezuela
- Trump threatened new conflicts abroad
- human rights groups accused his administration of crimes
And yet Trump praised Rubio for slapping his name on a federal buildingādespite the fact that a court had already blocked Trumpās firing of the instituteās board members, calling it unlawful.
The applause from Trumpās circle was muted.
The African leadersā faces were stone.
No one was celebrating.
A Reporter Exposes the Charade
The final blow came when the African journalist repeated her question:
Youāre announcing peace, but there is no peace.
Congo is still under attack.
Troops are still engaged.
People are still dying.
Trumpās answer?
A vague ramble about āmiracles,ā āgreat men,ā and āimmediate results,ā even though heād just said change might take years.
It was incoherent.
It was contradictory.
It was painfully clear he had no idea what was happening in Congo.
Dozing Off on Live TV
As Rwandaās president gave a formal statement, Trumpās eyelids drooped.
His head tilted.
His face slackened.
He was asleep.
On live television.
During a global peace announcement.
With foreign leaders sitting inches away.
The camera captured it all.
And Then Came the Final Insult
Hours later, Trump attacked Somalia and Somali-Americans, calling the entire country āthe worst on earthā and claiming refugees should never have been allowed into the United States.
He blamed Barack Obama.
He blamed Minnesotaās governor.
He smeared an entire nationality for political applause.
The contrast was jarring:
At the very moment Trump pretended to celebrate African āpeace,ā he was attacking African nations and African people.
A Press Conference That Will Go Down as a Disaster
The event ended the only way it could:
- confused
- incoherent
- embarrassing
- internationally ridiculed
And for all the talk of peace, one truth remained:
Nothing changed in Congo. People still died that day. And Trumpās ādealā meant nothing.
